25 Years and a few weeks ago, I handed my notice in at ADP Dealer Services. I had been working as their Development Director in the UK for 5 Years following the purchase of our family business – “Modems” – by ADP.
Well, I am an autonomous kind of guy. I like to be in control of my own destiny, and whilst the experience of working for a large multi-national was good, the constraints of corporate politics and policies was somewhat stifling. However, it was more than that. I felt that myself and my father (who I set DMS Navigator up with) had far more to offer the sort of dealer that we wanted to work with.
I felt that there was a space in the market for a small company with great background in delivering solutions – and even 25 years ago I’d been at this for 10 years!
As a small startup, I found that I quickly needed to learn skills I’d never had before. Like sales - I was selling our solution!
Long days... I was used to these; in the early months, I was often putting in 16 hour plus days - spending a day on site with our “pilot” dealership (50 miles away in Liverpool!) to come home at night, to perhaps write, or test new software ready to deliver the following day! We were literally doing daily software updates!
25 years later, I look back and see we must have had something right – that first pilot customer still uses our system! I’m still as fired up for delivering solutions to “our” kind of customer as I was 25 years ago. I’m just a little bit greyer than I was then!
