Today is World Environment Day.
Sustainability is something that has crept up on me over the years. I first installed solar panels at home about a decade or so ago.
My interest in sustainability changed about 6 years ago.
Interestingly, sustainability wasn't actually my reason for buying the car. I was simply looking for a high performance, but use everyday 4 door car and the Tesla fitted the bill. The fact that it was electric was an interesting sideshow at my point of purchase!
As an early-adopter of an Electric Car, I did what pretty much every Tesla owner did - joined Tesla Owners UK - the official Tesla Owners club.
Much of the discussion on the Facebook group was as much about sustainability as it was about the car. This got me thinking, and over the years I've become more and more sustainable in the way I approach life - without becoming a tree-hugger in the process (I hope).
Whilst I have a long way to go in the process, my aim is simple, from a personal and business perspective, to leave the planet no worse than I joined it. I can't be responsible for the actions of others, but only myself.
From a business perspective this has meant doing everything, from installing LED light bulbs, installing low-energy computers through to replacing the entire car fleet with full electric models on replacement.
We also reduced business miles by making more use of video meeting.
And encouraged sustainable transport for all, including promoting the Cycle to Work scheme and launching a Salary Sacrifice Electric Car Scheme.
We invest in Forest Carbon - a tree planting scheme based here in the UK .
There is always more to do!
I'm still in discussion with our landlord to put Solar Panels on the office building and install car chargers - he is old-school and doesn't "like" the look of solar panels on buildings so this has been a challenge. At least, our power is suppled from Renewables only.
Personally, I still have solar to install in the house I moved to 12 months ago, but I have smart heating which saves 20% on gas usage (and the associated cost) by strategically heating the house and doing things like automatically switching off the heat when noone is in. Of course, the whole house is low-power LED lit.
I will succeed in my aims in sustainabilty. Days like World Environment Day help me to focus on the journey so far and think about what else can be done.
