Spring is in the Air

Cycle Miles = Happy Smiles

The weather seems to have turned for the better this week!

The cold, wet and windy weather that has characterised the year so far has been replaced by warm, sunny Spring Days. Being the UK, this likely means it will snow next week.

For me, it allows me to get out more on my bike. I can commute to work more and go for early morning and evening rides.

I'm a keen cyclist - and I'm only now really realising how the "Pandemic" years have affected my cycling.

A good percentage of my annual cycle mileage (normally >5,000 miles) are just commuting to and from work a couple of times a week! I live 20 miles from work so this is good mileage! It's also "free" miles, in that I don't really have to reserve and time to cycle, as I would be travelling by car anyway at the time.

Working from home for such a long time has removed that commute from my day. It has seemed much harder to get up, get on the bike and cycle in a circle to my desk in my home office!

Frankly, I lost a lot of my cycling mojo. That equated to a loss of fitness and putting on a little weight which in turn makes cycling harder. I was struggling to keep up with my cycle club route over relatively short (40 mile) Sunday rides

But, I'm getting back on it! Feeling better, getting slowly fitter... The weight is harder to shake off when you're the wrong side of 50 but I'll get there.

I've managed to get onto the Ride London Cycle Sportive at the end of May. This is 102 miles of riding on closed Londom Roads - starting on the Embankment and looking out into the Essex countryside - passing within 100 yards of my childhood home. I would normally do such sportives 4 or 5 times a year, but this is the first since I did the Englkish stretch of Lands End-John O'Groats in Sept 2019!

I'm excited!

Enjoy the warm weather while it lasts!
